Dual DiagnosisDual Diagnosis is when a person has both an alcohol or drug problem and an emotional/psychiatric problem at the same time. The term dual diagnosis is often used interchangeably with the terms co-occurring disorder, co-occurring illness, dual disorder, co-morbity and co-morbid disorder. Most substance-abuse centers do not accept people with serious psychiatric conditions, and many psychiatric hospitals lack the expertise to effectively treat substance abuse. Texas Star Recovery fills this void by addressing all issues related to a dual diagnosis/co-occurring disorder. Often, people suffering from co-occurring disorders are treated for the symptoms of substance abuse and the coexisting psychiatric/emotional disorders are left unaddressed. Texas Star provides a comprehensive psychiatric assessment – defining emotional psychiatric factors and enabling concurrent treatment. According to a report published by The Journal of The American Medical Association, thirty-seven percent of alcohol abusers and fifty-three percent of drug abusers also have at least one serious mental illness. If these underlying issues are not diagnosed and managed, they often resurface – greatly increasing the odds of relapse.
